In 1923 The Kenworth Motor Truck Company opened for business. They named the new specialty company after Harry Kent and Edgar Worthington. They initially set up in Seattle. By the following year Kenworth had already sold more than 80 trucks. Since then they have never prodcued less than two trucks weekly.

Custom trucks became a Kenworth specialty with Vernon Smithbeing assigned a management position in sales. Like so many other companies the Great Depression halted expansion for Kenworth. Still, Kenworth continued sales and marketing efforts and began production of fire trucks and other commcial specialty vehicles later.

In a stunning move that ensured Kenworth would continue as a top manufacturer they took the risky gamble to put diesel engines in their production trucks. This proved extremely lucrative and set the stage for other manufactureres to copy the strategy. This changed long haul delivery forever. Unlike today where diesel cost more than gasolne, back then it cost one third the price of gas.

The following years allowed Kenworth to do other inovations to market. They introduced thier first sleeper cab. This allowed drivers to spend the night in thier truck as needed without getting a hotel room. This changed the industry in stunning ways as well. It was also the precursor to Jason Odom's ground breaking work Vanabode - travel forever on $20 a day.

Bigger seems to be better when it comes to accomodations so Kenworth later developed the biggest most well appointed OEM sleeper ever sold. It was named the Studio Sleeper. The 74-inch sleeper was designed to llok more like a minuture condo than a truck because it had a couch which turned into a bed when needed.

Kenworth released the T2000 in 2006 at the International Trucking Show. The T2000 showcased 25 years of development work in aerodynamics. It proved to be very comfortable and reliable. The T2000 was totally new from the frame to the body. Every component was rethought and replanned to offer the best they could at the time. Some folks did not like the body style or look of the turck but none could deny the efficiencly of the design.

Kenworth also started offering the "premium component package" which included a three-year, 350,000-mile basic vehicle warranty. The Extended Service Interval program helped set Kenworth apart from Freightliner and Volvo because the engineers had a very good idea of the total cost of owenership and could offer this to customers without fearing going broke doing it. The technology allowed the T2000 to run longer and harder without breakdowns.

When choosing a truck to convert to a recreational vehicle, live aboard unit, or tour business, be aware of the Seven Commandments for buying any truck - read that first! These commandments of advice will save you thousands of dollars and a lifetime of headaches.

Kenworth is still manufacturing some of the greatest looking and performing trucks on the road. Because big carriers and companies continue to buy the newest models, used trucks are constantly up for sale. See the vendors shown above for options on buying a Kenworth truck for sale.
